The more knowledgeable you are about your disease the better you can
communicate with your Doctor in making a decision on your best course
of treatment. There are several information sources you may wish to use.
The library at the new Comprehensive
Cancer Center at Community Hospital provides information and
referral services to patients, families, and members of the community.
The library is for the lay person and is filled with books, pamphlets,
tapes and videos on understanding cancer and its treatment as well as
prevention, early detection and risk assessment. Two computers with internet
access provide up to the minute information on treatment options and clinical
trials underway throughout the country. Staff and volunteers are available
to assist library patrons. One of our members, Pete
Salmonsen, is one of the library volunteers. For more information,
call Sandy Larson at 622-2746.
You may also wish to visit one of the many internet sites using your
own personal computer. There are hundreds of sites available, and it would
be presumptuous to pass judgment on any of these sites. The sites llisted
below are included only as samples to assist you in getting started. Try
the ones below or go to your search engine and type in "Prostate
Cancer". You will see numerous sites you may wish to visit. Remember
this quote by Dr. Peter J. Stuart of North County Hospital, Newport, Vermont:
"The biggest dilemma facing health sites is
the possibility that people may try to treat themselves based on advice
they find online, despite posted disclaimers." He goes on
to say: " People should use these sites to
gather information to take back to their doctor. They are a springboard,
not an answer."
The UCSF Medical Center has a web site referring
to clinical trials they are conducting. If you are interested in learning
about these trials, go to:
UCSF
Explore the information. Educate yourself. Consider your treatment options
with their possible side effects. Then be an active member of your treatment
team with your Doctor.
