New Finding
A Link Between Testosterone Replacement Therapy
and Prostate Cancer?
A link between
testosterone therapy and prostate cancer remains controversial. But a
new study conducted among patients at 6 urology practices suggests that testosterone
supplements may indeed spur the development of prostate
cancer.
Researchers looked
at the records of men who were prescribed testosterone for
sexual dysfunction or as anti-aging "rejuvenation." They found 20
men who had developed prostate cancer within months to years of starting testosterone
therapy. Eleven of these men developed their cancer within 2 years of starting
testosterone treatment. The other 9 developed prostate cancer 28 months
to 8 years later. The researchers reported that
the prostate cancers were moderate and high-grade tumors. Prostate-specific
antigen (PSA) levels, however, remained relatively low at an average of 5.1
ng/dL, and digital rectal exam generally proved superior to PSA level in detecting
the cancers.
